What is a Brain Mapping?

Brain mapping is the initial assessment of neurofeedback.

Brain mapping, as seen on Dr. Phil, provides a detailed examination and analysis of the patterns of brain activity. Brain mapping is used in neurofeedback to help identify the areas of the brain, as well as functional characteristics of brain activity, that are targets for training.

The information from the Brain Map is evaluated along with the clinical interview, client history, psychological assessments, continuous performance tasks, and symptom presentation to determine appropriate treatment goals. The initial assessment (Brain Mapping, also known as the QEEG) takes about an hour, with some of the assessments and questionnaires having been done ahead of time.

What should I expect?

A cap with 19 electrodes is placed on the head and conductive gel is used to carry the EEG signal from the scalp to the electrodes. Data is recorded during resting states of eyes open and eyes closed, and in some instances, during challenging tasks such as reading or solving math problems. Approximately five minutes of data are recorded in each state.

The recorded data is then processed using a state-of-the-art software program called Jewel for BrainAvatar to obtain detailed brain mapping and indicate areas of the brain needing training.
